Flavia Ingham

“The paintings I create are stylistically simple in reaction to the overwhelming complexities of modern life. Waves of information, must have, must-do and must-be can be suffocating, so my intention is to create pictures that bring pleasure and an escape from reality with all its pressures.”- Flavia Ingham

The Artist.

As a child of adventurous parents, I had lots to feed my visual curiosity. We spent some years in Eswatini, on the Greek island of Hydra and then England, and as an adult, I spent a decade in Quebec, Canada. I expect what I create is influenced by the environments I have experienced, especially in childhood. I like to create somewhat naïve pieces that have a bit of drama accentuated by intense colours and a modern energy. Colour has always attracted me. I was a shy child so colouring and drawing were my favourite things to do. It started my obsession with different tones and shades and how they do or don’t work together. Personally, I love harmony whether in rich colours or fresh tones.

“I do like my pieces to have personality and presence. Although my pictures are contemporary, I am inspired by some traditional themes. A nude woman is often represented as soft, with an air of feminine vulnerability. I wanted to paint a naked woman who was someone strong, striking and calm. Another traditional subject I enjoy painting in a bold, abstract way is a vase of flowers.”- Flavia Ingham

The Vision.

Nowadays, many of us would like life to be more straightforward and I guess that is what my work is. It is straightforward. I would like the paintings to have an impact when you enter the room while at the same time be easy to be around because of their uncomplicated nature. I would like my paintings to convey happiness, calm or strength, something positive anyway. To bring a little joy into someone’s life with my paintings would be great. - Flavia Ingham
